I’ve been working on a clever little introduction for a while but it’s not working. Not enough clever, not an introduction. So I’ve decided to go with the old reliable route….
WHO:
I’m a punk rocker / whale freak. Full on. Whales are incredible animals and I know that when you get to spend some time near them like I have it’ll change your life.
WHAT:
Provincetown Whales got its start in 2010. No profit is made – guests just pay for gas. I got the idea for Provincetown Whales when I went on a New England Aquarium whale watch last spring – it was rad, but it felt antiseptic. The idea of seeing something so inspiring w/ 200 strangers struck me as being weird.…I knew there had to be a better way. A few weeks later I chartered a private fishing boat to take my girlfriend and I on a private whale watch – it was incredible, but it still wasn’t 100% perfect – they were charging a ton of money and the boat owner and first mate were fishing the whole time! I will say this, the whale watching was incredible! My first brush with the Leviathans on such a face-to-face kind of way...It inspired me to buy my own boat and start this whole thing up! Last summer we went out and did our first whale watches, the pictures of which you’ll see on this site. This is the first of it’s kind in Boston – 100% DIY whale watches …whales in their own environment, on their own terms, without disrupting them or the seascape.
Education + Dedication = Preservation
WHEN:
WHEN: Spring, Summer and Fall! Select weekends and the occasional weekdays, rain or shine! The only thing that will prevent us from going out to see the whales will be wind - wind is a serious pain in the butt when you're looking for whales: EVERY whitecap and wave looks like a humpback AND the rocking brings out the seasickness in all of us. Please see the "Updates" page for more info on the current season!
WHERE:
Trips leave from Russo Marina in Dorchester Bay which is in Boston Harbor, Boston, Massachusetts. (WE CAN ALSO DEPART FROM PROVINCETOWN.) We leave in the morning (time depends on the tide) and spend a minimum of 5 hours on the water, weather permitting, but most likely 7 or 8. Hell, in July it might even be more if it’s going well! It takes about an hour, hour and a half, to get to the Stellwagen Bank, but when we’re there its WHALE ON! (A cool feature of the trip is the amazing view of the Dorchester gas tanks from the harbor…really cool photo op for everyone who grew up around them.)
WHY:
Because I believe that whales are amazing creatures. They are beautiful, poetic, fun, and brilliant. And I feel that once you have been given the gift of seeing them in their habitat that you’ll do whatever you can to protect them from the dangers mankind pushes on them.
HOW:
Please keep in mind that Provincetown Whales uses small boats, not the big ones with bars and restaurants included. There is no bathroom. In case of emergencies we can go to Provincetown where there are public bathrooms at the pier. I supply peanut butter sandwiches and a little water. You should bring some treats for yourself – vegetarian or vegan only, please – and whatever drinks you want. Beer is fine, within reason. Also, bring extra clothes – you never know how cold you’re gonna be out there. You’ll also need sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat. Bring your own camera, but you’ll also have the option of having our staff photographer do a CD full of pix of the day for you for an additional $30. We are working on the potential of having a video camera and/or an underwater video camera, but that’s still in the planning stages!
